A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Term 1 Reflection
Wow – what another fulfilling term it has been! As I reflect on this incredible journey of learning and growth at Kohimarama School, I am filled with pride and gratitude. At the heart of everything we do is our unwavering commitment to quality education, with students firmly at the centre. This commitment continues to lead to positive outcomes and achievements for our learners.
This week, we have the opportunity to celebrate student learning through the sharing of information, observation of materials produced and the co-construction of next learning goals. I hope you’ve been able to take part in these important conversations. When school and home work in partnership to support each learner, we create the conditions where success will follow. From academic milestones to creative endeavours, every achievement is a testament to the dedication, effort, and curiosity of our students, supported by our wonderful parent and teacher community.
Our Kohimarama School curriculum is grounded in solid research and international best practice. We are proud to provide an enriching learning experience – one that inspires, empowers, and equips our students to dream, inspire, create, and empower. Our school ethos, The Kohimarama Way, puts values and learner dispositions at the core of all we do. It's not just about what we teach – it’s about how we nurture curiosity, resilience, empathy, and excellence to prepare our students for a dynamic and ever-changing world.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to our parents for your ongoing support, to our teachers for their passion and commitment, and – most importantly – to our students, for their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Together, we build a vibrant learning community that reflects, refines, and implements excellent pedagogy.
I would also like to sincerely thank you for the support and partnership in learning which is a vital part of what makes Kohimarama School such a special place to learn and grow. Our vision, values, and learner dispositions – The Kohimarama Way – clearly articulate our learning direction. We are a highly successful school delivering well-rounded, capable learners as evidenced in the OECD and Curriculum Insights results shared earlier this term.
Celebrating the Kohimarama Way in Action
It’s always affirming to hear from our parent community about how our students bring The Kohimarama Way to life in the real-world. Here are just two of the wonderful pieces of feedback we’ve received recently:
“A Year 8 student really impressed me last week during Friday’s pizza handout. She and a friend popped downstairs to pick up the pizzas for their rooms and they both immediately offered help – carrying boxes and supporting younger students. The Year 8 student showed great leadership skills in a calm but firm way and was able to see where help was needed without any prompting. A truly wonderful student and an asset to the school.”
“I was on a school trip with Hillary Team classes today and was just blown away by the behaviour of the children. They were respectful to teachers, parents, the bus driver, the staff of the art gallery and library – and to each other. They were confident, kind, and fully engaged in the learning. They followed instructions, picked up their rubbish, and participated with enthusiasm and curiosity. The bus ride was a hum of conversation – no shouting or silliness. This experience was a true embodiment of The Kohimarama Way. It was clear to see the work you and your staff have poured into helping these children become confident, curious, conscientious, and respectful citizens. The teachers were, as always, absolute super heroes.
These are just a few examples of the values and dispositions we nurture in our learners every day. They remind us that the work we do together – as educators, parents, and students – is powerful and lasting.
Have a safe and restful break with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting and enriching term of learning.
The Kohimarama Way - Respect/Whakaute
"I firmly believe that respect is a lot more important and a lot greater than popularity." What is your opinion? We know that popularity is transitory and I would imagine it takes quite a bit of work and could involve changing of values to suit certain situations. Whereas if you know what you believe and what your bottom line is, these will always be constant and regardless of the situation you are in or the people you are with, if you stay true to these you will get the respect of your colleagues, family and friends.
School Book Fair - BIG thank you
Thank you so much to Claire Frazerhurst and her team of volunteers who have made sure our school book fair has been available before and after school each day last week and still for some time this week. We really appreciate your enthusiasm and commitment to having books and stationery items available for purchase by our community. It is great to see such a strong interest in reading and all things 'book'.

Book Day last week
Wow, what a fabulous array of costumes we saw on Wednesday last week. We had so much fun on the day at our book parade, looking for Wally in our playgrounds at break times (Colenso found Wally the most), all the fun activities in the library at big break with adults reading books to our students as well. We also had 3 times during the day when we all 'stopped, dropped and read'. And even better, we wrote a story as a whole school - each learning space had a particular part of the story to write and then we put it altogether. It is a real example of how drafting and editing makes such a difference to good literature, we had fun though.
