A Message from the Deputy Principals
Student Fundraiser for the Cancer Society
Last week we had our Student Councillor Fundraiser for the Cancer Society. The theme the Student Councillors had chosen was 'Wacky Socks' and we certainly got a lot of them! There were mismatched socks, socks with faces, socks with laces, stripey socks, colourful socks - you name it - there were those kinds of socks.
Here are some thoughts from some of the Student Councillors about why they chose the Cancer Society as a charity to support and their impression of Wacky Sock Day...
- Grace P. - Wacky Sock Day was to help the Cancer Society, and this went really well, I thought it was fun for other kids to come wear their wackiest socks and notice how creative others were.
- Huxley W. - We chose the Cancer Society because it is such an important sickness and our fundraiser will benefit so many people. I thought it was awesome getting all the people in very wacky silly socks to help something so serious.
- Estella D. - The Cancer Society helps so many people and really makes a difference. I thought that it was so cool to see the variety of different lengths, colors and sizes for Wacky Sock Day.
- Thomas O. - We chose the Cancer Society because they support so many New Zealanders with cancer, supporting families and saving lives. I think that Wacky Sock Day was a good idea because people brought their funniest and weirdest socks to school. People compared socks and laughed at the different socks that were brought to school.
Thank you to everyone who took part and helped raise funds for the Cancer Society!

The Kohimarama Way - Aroha/Compassion
Compassion begins by noticing when someone seems sad or troubled. Put yourself in their place and ask how you would feel if it were happening to you. Think about how you can help. Take time to listen, and then say kind things like "What are you sad about?" and "How can I help you?" Be forgiving when others make mistakes. Be a friend when someone needs a friend.

Pink Shirt Day - This Friday
This Friday the 15th of August Kohimarama School will be having it's Pink Shirt Day. Over this week teachers and students will be discussing what bullying is and isn't and how to be an upstander and not a bystander. To remind students and raise their awareness and understanding of this important issue, all students are encouraged to wear as much pink as they can (no face paint or hair colour please) this coming Friday. They do not need to bring a gold coin in order to participate.
