A Message from Hillary Team
Year 5 Camp 2025
My favourite thing was the Giant’s Ladder because it was challenging at first, but then at the top it was really cool. We had to use a lot of teamwork to get to the top. I really enjoyed camp because you got to know your friends better. I liked the raft building because it was challenging to use the materials they gave us, but it was so much fun when we got to sit on it in the ocean and jump off! Some things at camp were hard, but I’m proud of myself for giving things a go. Some of the things weren’t as hard as I thought they would be. The food and movie night was really fun because the food was yummy and we got to watch the movie Luca all together like a big sleepover.

Year 4 Sleepover 2025
“This is the best day of my life!” yelled Oliver as he was running around our school during the scavenger hunt. It was very dark, we were running in our teams and shining our torches onto the codes. The hardest code to find was on the rugby post because it was so high.
After our amazing and fun scavenger hunt we came into the hall to get ready for dinner. The food was all mouth-watering and we tried to not eat too much. We even had dessert!
After dinner came the paper chain challenge. In our groups we had 10 minutes to make the longest paper chain that we could. Tessa, Monica, Henry, Liam and Misha won the competition. Their paper chain was about 3 metres long!
It was then time to get ready for bed. We got into our pyjamas, brushed our teeth and settled into our beds with a book. After a while the teachers turned off the lights and we all drifted off to sleep (at least we’ll pretend that is what happened! Hehe).
ZZZZZZZZZZ - that’s the sound of 70 students sleeping!
In the morning we packed up our gear, our parents picked us up and we went home for breakfast.
Our day at school was more chilled than usual (because we were a bit tired) and involved watching a movie.
This is a collaborative piece of writing by LS 17.

The Kohimarama Way - Reliable/Totika
"You need not wonder whether you should have an unreliable person as a friend. An unreliable person is nobody's friend." Idries Shah. Ain't this the truth? They might be able to tell the best jokes, be the best person to have around the dinner table, etc but if they always turn up late, never do what they say they are going to do, or forget the arrangements you have made together, they wear a bit thin and usually become the sometime friend then the not friend anymore.

BIG UPS and thank you to our teachers who supervised on the night, spent time at the various doors keeping our students safe, being prepared for first aid, working in the kitchen giving out snacks and drinks and dancing along with our students ensuring everyone had the best time ever. Year 8s representing Kohimarama School at the AIMs Games.
For the first time in Kohimarama School’s history, a futsal team will be heading to the prestigious AIMs Games.
The team, made up of eight students, only started playing futsal earlier this year. But in just one term, they’ve shown great determination and teamwork, winning the East City Futsal Tournament held at Barfoot & Thompson Stadium in Term 1.
In August, the team will travel to Tauranga to compete against intermediate schools from all over New Zealand in the AIMs Games, Australasia’s largest junior sporting event with over 12,000 students taking part each year.
A big thank you goes to Craig Brierley, who had the idea to put a team together for AIMs and has taken on the coaching role alongside Tomas Tonnelier.
Kohimarama School is also proud to have another Year 8 student, Isaac, competing at the AIMs Games individually in yachting. He competed at AIMs last year, qualifying for the top fleet (Gold) and placing 7th out of the 19 Year 7 boys who sailed in Gold Fleet. Isaac loves sailing and being on the water; at the end of Term 3 last year, Isaac and 5 other boys from around New Zealand travelled to Australia to represent New Zealand as part of the NZL Junior Boys Development Team. Isaac is looking forward to enjoying AIMs Games again this year! We look forward to celebrating his success alongside the futsal team.
It’s a huge opportunity for all the students involved, and one they’re incredibly excited about. We’re proud to see them representing Kohimarama School on the national stage and wish them all the best in their lead-up to the tournament.
Keep an eye on the school newsletter and social media for fundraising updates and ways you can help support their journey to the AIMs Games!

Attention Chess Players!
The NZ Chess Federation's 2025 Auckland Girls' Chess Championship is being held on Monday, 16 June 2025, from 9.00am - 2.30pm at Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, in Mt Eden.
The competition has proved popular with girls of all ages since it began in 2001, and has been very successful in encouraging more girls to play chess, and identifying female players with potential. Most of New Zealand’s top female chess players had their first experience of tournament chess playing in this event.
The Auckland Girls' Championship is held as three separate tournaments in the following age groups - under 18, under 12, and under 10 (age at 1 January 2025.) Age group titles are also awarded for under 16, under 14, under 8, and under 6 – provided there are at least 3 girls in each category.
Trophies and medals are awarded for place-getters, and every player receives a participation certificate.
Girls represent their schools as individuals. They don’t have to be expert players but do need to know the basic rules of chess. It is not a knockout competition and everyone gets to play 6 games. The time control for each game is 15 minutes each, plus 5 seconds per move per player. This is to ensure rounds run to time.
The entry fee is $20.00 per student.
If we have any interested students then we will need support from some parents/caregivers to transport and accompany the participants.
If you have a student interested in participating please email sports@kohimarama.co.nz.
