A Message from Snell Team
It was 11 o'clock, Monday the 21st October, when the Year 7 and 8 Hub arrived at Camp Adair for a week jam packed with fun and adventures. From the High Swing to the Mud Slide, there was a new challenge for everybody. Fourteen exciting activities pushed each and every person out of their comfort zone. We started out small, with Orienteering and Team Challenges to give us a taste of what was to come. Little did we know, we would soon be doing activities like the Leap of Faith and the High Swing.
Each day we awoke to the sound of a whistle. Dawn to dusk we were covered in dust, mud or water, while we ran around having a blast. Some faced fears of heights, others learnt skills of how to survive in the New Zealand bush, but everybody left the camp ground with the same thing: trust in their peers. After just 5 days with each other, we had built on and become one big “happy” family.
The Friday we returned to school we were met with big smiles and even larger hugs from loved ones. It had been a long and exhausting week but by the end of it, everybody had gained something. Whether it be that they overcame a fear or simply grew trust in their friends. Either way, camp was an extraordinary experience we won’t soon forget. A big thank you to the parent helpers and teachers for making such an amazing week possible.

The Kohimarama Way - Commitment (Manawanui)
You know you are successfully practising commitment when you: think before you make a promise, keep every agreement you make, make decisions confidently, go the extra mile, give 100% to everything you do, and are faithful to people you care about.
Teacher Only Day (TOD) 15th November
We would like to inform you that Kohimarama School will be holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 15th November. This day has been granted by the Minister of Education to support professional learning and development focused on the NZ Curriculum and in particular English and Mathematics and Statistics. We are excited to welcome a guest speaker from the Ministry of Education, who will provide insights into these curriculum changes. Our teachers will also participate in workshops to identify any necessary adjustments to our current practices.
We appreciate your understanding and support in providing this valuable professional learning opportunity for our team. Remember, Bizzy Bodz will be available to support you by providing a programme on 15th November. At our earlier TOD 50 students from the school had a fun and exciting day of learning and activities.

Student Fundraiser - Make a Wish Charity
Thank you to all of you who participated on Friday to make some very ill children's wishes come true. As usual our students and parents committed to the day and the students came dressed in mufti with others dressed as they wish they can be when they grow up - great variety. These four student fundraisers throughout the year have raised around $3,200 and the charities that the Student Leaders chose for 2024 are very grateful for Kohimarama School's contributions - you rock!!
Mitey - Teachers Only Day
Last week during Teacher’s Only Day the Staff worked with the team from Mitey - which is a mental health education programme developed by the Sir John Kirwan Foundation. We are delighted to partner with Mitey in order to support the mental health and wellbeing of all our students. Our work with them will get fully underway in 2025.
The Sir John Kirwan Foundation has designed Mitey with NZ teachers and the University of Auckland to provide an evidence-based approach to teaching mental health education to primary and intermediate aged children.
It is built around the NZ curriculum and embedded into everyday learning, to ensure children are equipped with the age-appropriate skills and knowledge they need to recognise and respond to mental health issues in both themselves and others before they enter teenage years.
Mitey has successfully implemented its approach to schools in Auckland and we are excited to be included.

Spare forms are in the office if your child has misplaced theirs.

Athletics Day
Our final major school sporting event for 2024, Athletics Day, is scheduled to take place at Glover Park on Monday November 11. Hopefully you can join us. This event is for Years 4 -8.
A plan of the day is attached-please note these times are approximate.
Bake Sale Fundraising
Last week, a group of year three tamariki (Eme, Millie,Finn and Ryder) came home from Kohimarama School with a great idea: they wanted to hold a bake sale and raise money for Starship. Over the next few days at school, they got busy planning, making a menu and signs for their stall.
Thankfully, the weather was on their side, and their wonderful idea came to fruition. They held their bake stall, with the help of their younger siblings, at Madills Farm on Sunday afternoon, raising a whopping $120 for Starship!
Well done to these amazing students.
