A Message from Kiri Team
Haere mai everybody!
Kiri Team was excited to have ‘Riley’ from Young Ocean Explorers visit us at the end of last term to promote the idea of Kaitiakitanga, the idea of guardianship. Since then we have been working hard on posters asking people to be wrapper free, and to pick up rubbish so it doesn't get washed into our ocean. If every child in NZ picked up just one piece of rubbish a day, that would be 750,000 pieces of rubbish saved from the ocean!
Another highlight from Term 2 was a visit from The New Zealand Playhouse, this was a hilarious interactive adaption of a Kenneth Grahame classic story. "The Reluctant Dragon’’ had us laughing and thinking about the value of friendship, kindness, solving problems without fighting, and not judging dragons by their covers.
Matariki was a lovely week, with a hikoi to the beach, followed by a delicious kai celebration for the whole school, then stories and lantern making. We truly got very lucky with the most beautiful weather.
Well done to the Kohimarama Rock Band-You Rock!! Thank you for your performance at the end of Term 2. Everybody was rockin' to the beat. Thank you also to Sawyer Friesen who treated us to a solo violin performance in Rooms 1 and 2.
Our School Cross Country is in week 3 Term 3. Each day Kiri Team have been training, running laps, laps and more laps! We can’t wait!
We are looking forward to another exciting Term 3.
Haere rā

The Kohimarama Way - Friendliness
Friendliness is being a friend. It is taking an interest in other people. It is going out of your way to make others feel welcome or to make a stranger feel at home. When you are friendly, you happily share the good times and the bad times together. Friendliness is the best cure for loneliness.
School Counsellor Referrals
Please find below the procedure for you to refer your child to one of our School Counsellors - Yvette or Amrutha. A hardcopy of referral forms can be obtained from the school office, just inside the door, or you can access a referral form from our school website https://kohimarama.schoolzineplus.com/school-counsellor There is a facility for Year 7 and 8 students only, to refer themselves. Whilst what is said in these sessions is confidential between the student and Counsellor you as a parent will be informed that these sessions are taking place.
Student Fundraiser - Friday 2nd August Starship Hospital
Our Student Council has chosen to raise funds for Starship Hospital this term. They figured a lot of us would visit there for one thing or another. We are asking students who wish to participate to bring $2 and wear mufti (weekend or after-school clothes). Additionally, if students want, they can bring a soft toy for the day.
How Lateness impacts your child's learning
Students who arrive after the bell miss out on the very important set up for the day i.e. what is happening in class, the outline of their learning for the day, what materials they will need, any changes to the learning programme, any important notices and the being ready to learn. Every student needs time to transition successfully from home to school, to meet and greet their teacher and their peers, which is why we open our classrooms from 8.30 am ready for an 8.55 am start to enable this to happen. Data to show the impact of lateness on a child's learning over time
School Art Gallery - Opening Night Tuesday 13th August @ 5.00pm - 7.00pm
Each of our students have created two pieces of artwork which will contribute to the School Art Gallery that will be on display from 13th - 15th August in our school Hall. You are warmly invited to come along to our Opening Night, which will start at 5.00pm with a student performance followed by viewing until 7.00pm. The Art Gallery will be open for viewing by parents and family members from 8.30 - 5.00pm Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August. Please come and enjoy our students' creativity.
Kohimarama Students Band Concert
Thanks to our Band students, their tutors Fran, Liam and Dion and our Band Director Jesse for the wonderful opportunity to listen to them play at the end of last Term. All these students started from scratch, learning to put their instruments together, hold them properly, and learn how to make a tuneful sound. They performed as a group of either clarinets, flutes, or trumpets and those of us in the audience thoroughly enjoyed listening to all their weeks of hard work.
Students Leaving
As we begin our classroom planning for 2025, we ask those families who have made plans and have a student who will be leaving Kohimarama School at the end of 2024 school year to complete this form. The last day of school is 17 December 2024.
Note: The form does not need to be completed for Year 8 students.
Many thanks for your support in assisting us with our advance planning.
