School Newsletter - 13th March 2024
A Message from the Principal
Good afternoon Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to our newsletter mid way through Term 1. Our staff and students have been working solidly since the beginning of the term and this culminated in the Meet and Greet time whereby students were able to share who they are as a learner at Kohimarama School.
The atmosphere created that afternoon by your presence was convivial and created a positive atmosphere for students, parents and teachers.
Today the school practised a lockdown process and that follows the earlier evacuation process this term.
PTA
Thank you to Valerie Delaney and Alan Clarke for taking a lead in supporting the PTA organisation. Thank you to Amanda Sadlier who initiated the process by surveying the community.
The school partnership with the PTA is most important as collaboration with the school and PTA aims to create a dynamic partnership that fosters the holistic development of our students. The PTA supports providing enhanced educational opportunities for students through funding of CAPEX items and support systems such as sushi lunches, trivia nights etc. that connect all of us together as members of this learning community.
Year 8 Boys visit to Sacred Heart College for Year 9 Enrolment
Our Year 8 students received a personal invitation to visit Sacred Heart College for entry at Year 9. The boys and parents were met by the Principal and Deputy Principal and the enrolment officer. Enrolments for these boys are being processed for 2025.
Following the visit, I received this comment from Patrick Walsh, Principal of Sacred Heart College; The boys from Kohimarama School will be exceptionally well prepared for high school and would add value to Sacred Heart College.
Visit by Brooke van Velden, MP for Tamaki and Deputy Leader of the ACT Party
Brooke visited the school on Friday and spent time with school leadership and members of the board. Brooke was interested in our history and was keen to support our school in her roles in Parliament. Brooke also took time to walk through the school and see first hand our facilities and our upcoming needs for infrastructure investment.
School Counsellor to start next week
We are delighted that our new school counsellor, Yvette Summers-Gervai will begin her counselling work on Tuesday 19th March. Yvette wanted to share her bio with you as an introduction:
I am a student counsellor in my second year at AUT. I am a mum to 3 boys, aged 11 & twin 15-year-olds and live in Orakei. I also work part-time as a Teachers Aide at a girl's school. My current counselling interests are in neurodiversity, children and counselling in nature (ecotherapy). I am a patient and compassionate person and create rapport with children quickly. I look forward to supporting your child through whatever they might be experiencing. It doesn’t matter how small or large their situation is, I am here to listen and guide them through their feelings, problems, and experiences. Confidentiality and safety are incredibly important, I will always discuss this with your child and is something I am more than happy to discuss with you further. I look forward to meeting some of your children throughout the year.
Reminder that the access to the counsellor is via an email counsellor@kohimarama.school.nz
The process below outlines the ways in which referrals are made.
The Kohimarama Way - Honesty
"When you are honest you have a great deal of power. You have the power to choose, the power to change, and the power to grow." Cary Zukav. "The high road is always respected. Honesty and integrity are always rewarded." Scott Hamilton.
Bridges to School
On Thursday the 15th of February, it was bridge day, an exciting event for us Year 8s to participate in. We were very lucky to get this STEAM opportunity and to experience the life of an Engineer. For safety we wore High Vis vests, construction hard hats, and gloves were optional. This engineering activity pushed our collaborative skills to our limits, strengthening our collaboration and communication skills. This made sure we all got the chance to build and walk across the bridge. Because of our teamwork, we made a sturdy bridge and were able to walk across our completed project at the end.

Swimming Sports
The Yr 5-8 Kohimarama School event has been rescheduled to take place at Sacred Heart College's indoor pool on Friday March 15 from 9:30am.
We have a reduced timeframe for the programme, therefore our 4 X 25 metre individual medley races and our 100 metre freestyle races will be placed at the end of the day, and will proceed if time permits.
Top performers across our Yr 5-6 events will be selected to represent the school at the Bay Suburbs inter-school meet on Tuesday March 26, also at Sacred Heart College.
Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic Book Orders are due in by 22nd March.
Change of Assembly
Due to the Year 5-8 Swimming sports now being on Friday the 15th of March, we will not be having the Junior (Kiri/Cowley) or Senior (Hillary/Snell) assemblies on that day. Both assemblies will now be on the following Friday - Friday the 22nd of March at their usual times: Junior Assembly 11.30am; Senior Assembly 1.50pm.
