A Message from Kiri team
Kia ora from Kiri Team,
Term 1- A Fresh start to to the Year!
Have you noticed we have a new playground! Come and check it out, it is so exciting! We have a brand new set of interesting equipment and a fun environment that has been thoughtfully designed to suit our age group. Kiri teachers will be having a compulsory slide this week!
There is another surprise, newly painted classrooms for a lovely fresh look. Kiri Team is rocking a very sharp look this year.
This term Kiri Team will be learning about the topic called ‘Identity’. During this inquiry we will learn about ourselves, where we come from, our language and culture. We have created a wharenui (meeting place) where we will display our self portraits and poems about our likes and dislikes. We will learn about the attributes of ‘The Kohimarama Way’ and how these shape us as learners.
This week we made an enthusiastic start to our self portraits and ended up with some delightful work, bursting with personality for us to admire and enjoy.
The beginning of the year creates excited feelings, full of anticipation, and wondering what our students will teach us this year. We have spent the summer resting, rejuvenating, planning and gearing up for this year, and now we can’t wait to share all that we can with our students during the coming year.
Haere rā, Kiri Team
P.S. There is some urgent mahi needed in our garden. We have a situation brewing! Calling all volunteer gardeners to help with a big summertime weedout. Ngā mihi.

The Kohimarama Way - Honesty
Honesty is important because it builds trust. When people lie, or cover up mistakes, others can't trust them. When people aren't honest with themselves, they pretend that something doesn't matter when it does or they exaggerate to impress others. When you are honest with yourself, you accept yourself as you are. When you are honest, others can believe you.
SIGNING YOUR CHILD OUT DURING SCHOOL HOURS
When you need to sign your child/children out during school hours, please come to the office first and the Office Staff will call your child’s classroom for them to meet you at the Office.
Please do not go to the classroom first to collect your child/children.
Please avoid collection times between 11.00am-11.30am and 1.00pm-1.50pm as these are break times.
PHOTOGRAPHS
We want to ensure that Kohimarama School is a safe place for all our students. We therefore ask that you do not take any photographs of children in the school grounds or in the classrooms.
There are families in the school that have not consented to their children to be photographed.
Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.
SCOOTERS AND BIKES
Some of our students have been reported to the school as travelling at excessive speed on their scooters on the footpath.
Please remind your child/children that they must ride carefully and as the road code states:
‘On the footpath: you must ride carefully and be considerate of others on the footpath. You must not ride at speeds that put other footpath users at risk. You must give way to pedestrians and drivers of mobility vehicles.’
Band Sign Up Information Evening - Wednesday 7th February
- Where: School Library
- When: 6.30 pm
This is for Years 4 to 8 students who would like to learn a woodwind or brass instrument at school i.e. saxophone, clarinet, flute, cornet, trumpet or trombone. Come along and meet Jesse Sheehan our Band Director, learn more about what it involves and ask any questions you may have. Learning an instrument supports the learning of maths and instills life skills - a great opportunity for our students so please come along and hear more.
Kapa Haka
Kia ora Kohimarama whānau,
We are looking forward to another year with Kapa Haka. It’s going to be another exciting year. We will be commencing Kapa Haka practice on Wednesday 21st of February (Week 4) at 7:45 am. Students will be invited to sign up in week 3. We will be incorporating wonderful waiata, tikanga and mātauranga Māori. If you are interested in being a parent helper for Kapa Haka please contact Reuben Holmes: rholmes@kohimarama.school.nz or Sarah Witchalls: switchalls@kohimarama.school.nz.
Ngā mihi
