School Newsletter - 18th October 2023
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Reminder
School is closed for students this Friday 20 October so that staff can focus on further professional development in the refreshed English curriculum. This day is provided by the Ministry of Education.
At our last board meeting we shared the PAT results for Years 4-8. PAT is a standardised, normed test that is completed online and marked by the New Zealand Council for Education Research (NZCER)
This was a compare and contrast against the term 1 results i.e. Have we added value to students' learning and outcomes over the last two terms that shows that there have been good gains/improvement to already good results?
Mathematics
In Mathematics you will see movement to the right hand side of the graph with more students achieving 'at' and 'above'. This demonstrates that at Kohimarama School we continue to challenge students no matter their achievement levels so that they continue to make improvements and accelerate learning through to the end of the year.
School Average | Term 1 266 Students | 16 (6%) | 124 (47%) | 126(47%) | 250 (94%) |
Term 3 266 Students | 11(4%) | 88 (33%) | 167(63%) | 255 ( 96%) |
Term 1
Term 3
Reading Comprehension
Again, we are looking for value added, continued improvement against what was good results to achieve positive improvenet from Year's 4-8.
School Average (264 students) | 42 (15%) | 101 (38%) | 121 (46%) | 222 (84%) |
Term 3 (266 students) | 23 (9%) | 106 (40%) | 137 (51%) | 243 (91%) |
Term 1
Term 3
Vocabulary
The influence of the structured Code programme introduced earlier this year has definitely improved outcomes here.
School Average (259/262 students) | 29 (11%) | 108 (41%) | 125 (48%) | 233 (89%) |
Term 3 School Average (255/261 students) | 19 (8%) | 88 (34%) | 154 (59%) | 242 (93%) |
Listening
School Average | Term 1 254/264 Students | 42 (16%) | 128 (48%) | 94 (36%) | 222 (84%) |
Term 3 254/261 Students | 34 (13%) | 98 (38%) | 129 (50%) | 227 (88%) |
The above results, especially in Mathematics and English, demonstrates the high level of engagement with students and teachers in the learning of these key areas. Programmes such as The Code have also played a part in lifting achievement to a higher level.
Congratulations to both teachers and students on these very pleasing results. Well done Kohimarama School.
The Kohimarama Way - Compassion
When people feel hurt or in trouble, they often feel alone. Feeling alone can make things even worse. Without compassion, the world is a hard and lonely place. Being compassionate helps us to feel less alone. Compassion helps us to be understanding of others and ourselves.
Photolife - Sibling Photos
Our next photolife session is on Thursday 9th November. If you would like your sibling photo taken, please complete a form at the school office by Wednesday 8th November.
Win with Words - Years 7 and 8 Writing
Thank you to St Heliers Bay Library for organising the opportunity for our students in Years 7 and 8 who wanted to to write a short story. We are very proud to inform you that Lara K and Ava C both received Highly Commended certificates for their stories: Island of Second Chances by Lara and Misbehaved by Ava. A copy of all the finalists' stories is in the school library for students to read and be inspired by. The photo below shows members of the Orakei Board who were one of the sponsors of the event along with Lara, and Ava's grandmother who represented her on the evening at the prize giving.
2023 Can Appeal for Auckland City Mission
In the week beginning Monday 30th October, we are asking families to bring cans of food to school as a donation for families and individuals who need support with food. If you are able to support please send 1 or 2 cans of food along with your child one day in this week. Thank you.
Student Fundraiser for Term 4 - Wednesday 8th November
This term we are raising funds for the charity 'Pillars'. This charity supports children who have a parent in prison. For students who want to support our fundraiser, we are asking students to bring $2 and they do not need to come to school that day in uniform - students can wear their own weekend clothes. Additionally, if students wish to, they can bring a soft toy to school and we will get a photo of us all.
School Disco - Friday 10th November
Our theme this year is Under the Sea, students are able to wear anything theme-related or their usual weekend clothes. The cost is $5, which covers the cost of DJ Dave and ensures all students have a drink and a snack during the disco.
- Junior Disco Years 0-4 = 5.00-6.00pm
- Senior Disco Years 5 - 8 = 6.30 - 8.00 pm
As Hillary team are composite, Year 4/5 classes students are able to go to the disco that most of their friends will be attending i.e. a Year 4 student who has most of their friends in Year 5 will come to the Senior disco and vice versa. Tickets will be on sale via Kindo from Monday 30 October and close Thursday 9 November. We will not be able to do door sales, so please get tickets via Kindo.
Future Problem Solving Success
At Kohimarama School, selected students in years 6 to 8 are offered the opportunity to participate in the Future Problem Solving programme. This year there have been 5 Future Problem Solving teams. The children research a series of global topics and apply the six-step problem solving process to resolve the Future Scene — a hypothetical scenario set 20-30 years in the future. Over the year, students have wrestled with issues surrounding E-Waste, Digital Realities and Robotic Workforce.
We are very pleased to announce that 2 of our teams placed first in their qualifying exams and are now heading to the National Finals camp where they will take on consumerism with the topic being Throw Away Society. Congratulations to Freya C, Madeleine S, Jamie C and Thomas RW (in our year 6 team) and to Lara K, Liz Z, Harry E and Phineas H (in our year 8 team). We wish them the best of luck for this event at the end of October. - Mrs Crow
