A Message from the Deputy Principals
Speech Finalists
The finalists from our School Speech competition are moving on to the Remuera Cluster Rehu Tai Final which for the Year 7 and 8 students is happening Wednesday 30th August here at school. For the Year 5 and 6 students, their final is next Wednesday 6th September. The winners from these competitions compete in the Auckland-wide Rehu Tai final later in September. All students must have the theme of Kaitiakitanga/Guardianship in their presentations. Students will be competing in one of the following 4 sections:
Flash Talk - Students speak for three minutes with a microphone if they wish but no cue cards. They have made 12 slides that appear on screen for 15 seconds, no words only visual images.
Rap - Students perform for three minutes with a microphone. They can either rap 'a cappella' or with an instrument beat, no cue cards are allowed.
Spoken Word Poetry - Students speak for 3 minutes with no cue cards. They may use a microphone if they wish. The purpose of their spoken word is to reflect on the theme at an individual, cultural and societal level.
Prepared Speech - (probably one of the worst or best memories from your school days)Students speak for 3 minutes with cue cards. They are not able to use a microphone and will be marked on 6 areas: construction, engagement, content, language, effectiveness and vocals.
As you can see our students have a lot to do in their 3-minute window, doing the best they can to remember what they will say as well as all the other facets that make the best performance for their chosen section. A life skill that will hold them in good stead for their futures.
Wishing all our school finalists the best for their upcoming competitions:

Patteson House Colour Day
Last week we had our very first House Colour Day! House Colour Days are an opportunity for our ākonga to earn extra House Points for their House, build some more House spirit and have some fun.
On Friday, Patteson House came out in force and blue filled the school. The two ‘bluest’ people from each class, came up for a photo.
The Patteson House Captains - Isabel O, Lucas O, Henry T, and Cohen - collected up all of the points and ran fun activities during the Big Break for Patteson House ākonga to take part in.
There were relays, a game of ‘Simon Says’, a fun quiz activity and a cool version of Paper Scissors Rock. Everyone who came and participated in these activities earned extra points for Patteson House. The points earned through the House Colour Day will be added to the total points at the end of the year.
An Interview with the Patteson House Captains
Why did you want to be a House Captain?
- Lucas - I wanted to be a House Captain because I always looked up to them and wanted to give back to Patteson House.
- Cohen - To show the school just how great Patteson house truly is.
- Isabel - I wanted to be a House Captain because I wanted to support younger members of my house and be a role model to them.
- Henry - I wanted to be a House Captain because I always wanted to call out the house points and make smaller patterson people want to get more involved in sports.
What is the best thing about Patteson House?
- Lucas - I think the absolute best thing about Patteson House is how we never give up.
- Cohen - The best thing about Patteson House is our sportsmanship, treating all houses equally.
- Isabel - I think the best thing about the Patterson House is that everyone shows a good attitude and does their best.
- Henry - The best thing about Patteson House is that we all cheer each other on.
What was your favourite part of House Colour Day?
- Lucas - My favourite part of the House Colour Day was seeing everybody dressed up in blue supporting our house.
- Cohen - My favourite part of House Colour Day was seeing the enjoyment of all the kids during the games
- Isabel - My favourite part of House Colour Day was running the games with the students and awarding House Points for wearing our House Colour.
- Henry - My favourite part of the House Colour Day was walking around the school into classrooms and seeing all the blue patterson people supporting their house.
What have you enjoyed most about being a House Captain so far?
- Lucas - My favourite part about being a House Captain is being able to make a difference in our school.
- Cohen - My favourite part of being a house captain is helping younger students during our sports events, and supporting our house during cross country.
- Isabel - So far my favourite part of being a House Captain has been helping out younger students at sporting events like the Cross Country and Swimming Sports.
- Henry - What I loved most about being a House Captain so far has being cheering on ALL the students at Kohimarama School during sporting events.
Go Patteson!

The Kohimarama Way - Respect
"I'm not everybody's cup of tea. But sometimes criticism can be hurtful. Be respectful. I'm a good piano player, I can sing well, I write good songs. If you don't like it, fair enough. But give me a break." Sir Elton John.
School Gala
The Gala is just around the corner, but there's still time to grab a ticket!
If you can't attend or it's not your thing, you can still be part of the excitement.

Drop Off and Parking Around the School
We are getting complaints from the public regarding parents parking on yellow lines and over neighbouring driveways. Please be mindful of where you are stopping to drop/collect your children. Please abide by road rules. Please also keep the school driveway clear as it blocks access.
Classes for 2024 - How you can help
Please complete this Google form if you have information that will support us in ensuring the best placement for your child/ren in 2024. There are a number of complex issues that go into making up classes, and an important factor is the historical information you have that we need to know. We will use this information to make the best possible class placement we can. Please provide all requests before Wednesday 13th September.
Leavers
As we begin our classroom planning for 2024, we ask those families who have made plans and have a student/s who will be leaving Kohimarama School at the end of 2023 school year to complete this form. The last day of school is 15 December 2023.
Note: The form does not need to be completed for Year 8 students.
Many thanks for your support in assisting us with our advance planning.
Donations of school shoes and sneakers
One of our parents is working on a project with Painga Project focusing on equity in Auckland schools. There is an immediate need for school shoes and sneakers of all sizes both to keep children warm and healthy, and allow them to participate in technology classes. If you have any shoes your whanau no longer need please drop them in a collection box in the school office. Every pair will go to immediate use. Thank you so much.
