School Newsletter - 19th July 2023
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents
Welcome back to Kohimarama School for Term 3. I especially want to welcome the new students who have started with us this term.
We had a fabulous start to the term with our international student visitors arriving. They are excited to be here to experience our Kohimarama Way, our NZ curriculum, our sports and activities.
I would like to acknowledge our students who have taken on a buddy role over the last few days. They have definitely displayed the Kohimarama Way of being and this has enabled our visitors to feel very welcome. Thank you to our students.
On Monday we had a full assembly to set the term off to a positive start. At this assembly the school acknowledged two staff who have stepped into leadership positions. Mrs Mills as our Deputy Principal had the Colenso Korowhai placed around her as a symbol of the leadership role that she is undertaking and the Mana that comes with that role. We also acknowledged Miss Hepburn who had the Atkin Korowai placed on her as the Leader of the Cowley Team.
Our school value this term is Respect. Our senior students dramatised what this looked like in our school so that our students could see and understand its meaning.
We also introduced our international students to the whole school and had them join us in singing our Kohimarama School song complete with actions.
School Fencing Project
As you will notice, the fencing project has moved along over the break, despite the poor weather. It is hoped that the project will be finished by the end of this month. Here’s hoping!
Professional Learning and Development
We have moved our professional learning and development from a focus on Social Science, including NZ History, refreshed New Zealand Curriculum in Terms 1 & 2 to Mathematics in the refreshed NZ Curriculum in Terms 3 & 4. Lucie Cheeseman, our accredited facilitator will be in school next week to begin our learning journey. The school Mathematics Team are coordinating and leading this work across the school with Lucie.
Learning Conversations
Following on from our reporting at the end of Term 2 via our ShoolTalk reports, we are now gearing up for Learner Conversations next week.
The Learning Conversations will take place on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th July. This is a time when students, teachers and parents can talk about the students' learning together and it provides an opportunity to unpack the SchoolTalk report further.
The times are:
- Wednesday 26th July - 1.30pm - 6.00pm
- Thursday 27th July - 3.30pm - 8.00pm
The purpose to hold these meetings include but are not limited to;
- To give parents time to discuss the progress of their child with the teacher.
- Having the report ahead of the discussion will help to focus on next steps.
- The strong, positive relationship between parents, teachers and students gives rise to accelerated outcomes for the learner.
- Teachers have been undertaking a range of assessments through the year and are able to make accurate Overall Teacher Judgements (OTJ).
- Teachers know their students well at Kohimarama School and are well placed to lead the discussion about learning. Parents, having reflected on the reports, are encouraged to ask questions to support their understanding of the report in relation to their child.
- Parents and teachers can together talk about what is happening at school and at home to create a full picture of support for the learner.
- There is a place for students to be part of the dialogue and they are most welcome to attend and contribute. e.g. why they think they are where they are? and what learning comes next? Or in the case of younger students, show and tell the learning that they are most proud of.
- As professionals, teachers are continually making assessments across the many areas of a child's development including academic, social, physical and wellbeing. When shared with your knowledge of your child it provides a powerful place of support for accelerating the learning.
Book your Learner Conversation here https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/6ux7e Please also note that school finishes for students at 1.00pm on Wednesday 26th July. We would prefer if you can make arrangements for your children at this time. The Kohimarama Way - Respect
Respect is an attitude of caring about people and treating them with dignity. Respect is valuing ourselves and others. We show respect by speaking and acting with courtesy. When we are respectful we treat others as we want to be treated. Respect includes honouring the rules of our family or school, which make life more orderly and peaceful. It is knowing that every man, woman and child deserves respect, including you.
