A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents
As we draw towards the completion of term 2, I want to reflect on the dedication and hard work that Mrs Ellery has undertaken as one of the Deputy Principals.
Thank you!
Mrs Ellery is an exceptional teacher who has left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. From your teaching in a classroom to supporting pedagogy and curriculum development, your influence will be felt for generations to come, as we pay forward the knowledge, wisdom, and inspiration you've given us.
On behalf of Kohimarama School, I extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering dedication, your infectious enthusiasm, and your boundless love for teaching. May your future endeavours be filled with joy, fulfilment, and continued success.

Stuff article on Open Plan Environments
Some of you may have seen or heard the recent Stuff article about open plan classroom environments.
I’d like to take the opportunity to support and acknowledge the teaching team here at Kohimarama School. All teachers have had continuous professional learning and development from an expert in teaching and learning in a hub, Dr. Mark Osborne. This has resulted in our pedagogy (science of teaching) being set up to manage both learning hubs and single classrooms. We do both exceptionally well as noted by our visiting facilitators and experts.
I have attached a document that I shared with you some time ago. It certainly gives you confidence that our way of learning including our Kohimarama Way and the resulting high academic achievement levels operate very well when the balance of professional learning and preparation, opportunity to practise, reflect and improve is in place prior to working in a learning hub.

Toi Wearable Arts
Our Year 7&8 students will be participating in the Toi, Wearable Arts tomorrow at the Aotea Centre in Auckland. I have seen many creations being pulled together as a part of the unplugged Thursday programme. Mrs Lawrence has engaged the students who are certainly preparing fantastic garments for the competition.
School Reporting
You will have received a letter on monday regarding general SchoolTalk information about our reporting mid year. SchoolTalk reports will be delivered via email on Friday morning.
Finally, I want to wish you all the very best for the coming winter break. I’m hoping that you will be able to spend some quality time with family. Staff are also looking forward to a break with family and friends. If you are travelling I wish you a safe journey.

The Kohimarama Way - Committed
Be committed and accept no excuses. Put in the work. Committed means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do long after the mood you said it in has left you.
EPRO8 results
Last week 4 Kohimarama teams competed at the first set of EPRO8 interschool events held at Churchill Park School. Each event involved 12 teams. A moving car wash with vehicle detector and height changing cleaning brush was one of the top picks, along with the Rat wheel cylinder that involved a generator and capacitor.
The year 5 team; Spencer, Joshua, Thomas and Yuuki placed 4th.
The year 6 team; Liam, Jamie, Hugo and Sam placed 1st and will progress to the semi-finals in September.
The year 7/8 girls team; Acacia, Liz, Izy and Alexa placed 3rd and will progress to the semi-finals in September. The year 8 boys team; Liam, Hugh, Lucas and Henry placed 7th.
We have 2 more year 5/6 teams competing in August hoping to make the semi-finals and wish them the best of luck.
Ki o Rahi
Earlier this week, 24 Snell students took part in the first 'Te Rōpū Pourewa' Ki o Rahi festival between our CoL schools. These schools included Orakei, Stonefields, St Thomas's and Kohimarama. The schools were celebrating Matariki by playing a traditional Maori sport called Ki o Rahi. The 2 teams of 12 versed the 3 other schools and played off for fun. One of our Kohimarama teams had a successful day by winning all their games and ending up in 1st place while the other Kohimarama team came 7th. Everybody loved the competitive spirit and the sausage sizzle at lunch! Good sportsmanship was shown, and hopefully the festival goes ahead next year!
Matariki Celebrations for 2023
Monday morning saw the beginning of our school's Matariki Celebrations for 2023. This is the third year we have done this morning celebration, and the numbers have grown exponentially!
Matariki is about coming together and looking forward to the year ahead, but also reflecting back on who is important to us. As a school, we have connections with a wider school community and have been collaborating with them for this celebration. Having a group from Stonefields school meet us at the beach and join us for karakia and waiata, is the essence of Matariki. Coming together to celebrate, and make bonds with new people.
For the remainder of the celebrations the Video Clip of our shared waiata will come out soon, and the artwork is displayed at Orakei Bay Village.
Matariki is not officially in the sky until the 14th of July. There are many amazing events to get involved in if you would like to celebrate this day with your whanau.
Thank you to all those who came on Monday. It was a very special day.
If you have any photos of videos, please send them to klawrence@kohimarama.school.nz
Roll Return June 2023
Twice a year, in March and June, all schools in New Zealand are required to furnish to the Ministry of Education a return detailing all students enrolled at their schools. This return determines our funding and staffing for the remainder of the school year. If your child is going to be absent or late for any reason on Thursday 29th June the office will require a letter or email from a parent/caregiver justifying the student’s absence from school.
This correspondence is to be provided to the school office, at office@kohimarama.school.nz, no later than Friday 29th June by 11am. Thank you in advance.
Enrolments – 2023
As we start our 2024 planning, if you have a child due to start at Kohimarama School in the next 18 months, please assist us by completing a pre-enrolment form
If you have already completed this we will have a record of your child. If you are currently living out of the school zone and have a sibling turning 5 in the next 12 months, please inform the office office@kohimarama.
Parent Help- School Cross-Country
The Kohimarama School Cross Country is booked for Thursday August 10 at Madills Farm. We also have a reserve day booked for Monday August 14, if we can't race on August 10.
We do require some parents to assist with the event. If you are available to help out on one or both of these days, please email dforbes@kohimarama.
Road Patrol Supervisors - Term 3
We are still looking for parents who are able to give up 35 minutes one morning each week for Term 3 to supervise our students on Road Patrol. We are able to offer support for what you need to do and you can even shadow a teacher one morning to see how it is done. Your support would be most valued, thank you. Email Meegan at mhill@kohimarama.school.nz if you are able to help or would like to find more information.
