A Message from Hillary Team
It has been a busy term with many fun learning opportunities, in Hillary team!
This term our learning has been focused on “Our land, our people and our history.” Our students have been doing their inquiry on their whakapapa to find out more about their own family history. Having our grandparents morning was an excellent way to begin our Inquiry as we got to interview them here at school and gather valuable information for our Inquiries. Learning about school-life when our grandparents were young was both interesting and funny! Most of them were shocked to see the computer programs and apps we get to use at school. One grandpa said he would have loved to be at school now-a-days as it looked like so much fun!
We also began our Rocket Challenge this term and learned some amazing things about Newton’s Law (Force = Mass x Acceleration) and gravity. It has been exciting planning, building and designing our rockets for launching. We have learnt that safety is important before launching and have been experimenting with different amounts of water used as the “rocket fuel”. Some classes have been assigned an engineer who has come out to help teach us more about engineering and rocket launching. This has been the best part of the project, along with the actual launching of the rockets. For the launch we use a bike pump, water and a launching kit that we received from The Wonder Project. Here are some photos of our rockets and launches.
What have we learnt from this:-
- Theo F- how to conduct an experiment and what impact pressure has on moving a rocket.
- Elliott - To work as a team and collaborate using everyone’s ideas.
- Aria - how to make a water- propelled rocket.
- Jasper- tips from the engineer on how to improve our design to make the rocket go further.
- Aurelia - measurement using a tape measure
- Emma - to use creative design and build our rocket using a team perspective.
Our trip to the Auckland Museum earlier this term provided us with an opportunity to explore our New Zealand history and landmarks. The lesson on volcanoes was interactive and taught us how to prepare for a possible eruption. Our trip to the volcano room was exciting and many of us were scared. Our teachers explained to us that this was only a simulation, which means it is not real! We also went on an amazing scavenger hunt that led us into the ANZAC war memorial room where we learnt more about the brave soldiers and some of us found names of our ancestors on the memorial wall!
The Kohimarama Way - Committed
"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilisation work." Vince Lombardi.
Parent Help- School Cross-Country
The Kohimarama School Cross Country is booked for Thursday August 10 at Madills Farm. We also have a reserve day booked for Monday August 14, if we can't race on August 10.
We do require some parents to assist with the event. If you are available to help out on one or both of these days, please email dforbes@kohimarama.
Student Fundraiser - Cystic Fibrosis
Thank you to our Student Counsellors who organised this event to support those with cystic fibrosis. Together, as a team we raised $903 - yeeha! A significant amount of money, which the organisation was most pleased to receive to support those in NZ who have this condition.
Year 5 and 6 Bay Suburbs Tackle Rugby Tournament
It was a real joy to be a spectator on the sidelines when our Boys Year 5 and 6 tackle rugby team took to the field for the first time last week. They were committed as a team and worked together to win their game. Great individual flair from players that managed to hook up with teammates to complete the forward momentum and score tries, as well as good cover and defence - you need both to win. Special recognition to our coach Justin, Ansita the team manager and Don our Sports Coordinator. You supported our students with practices, skills teaching, encouragement and belief - what a combination. The best bit was they won the whole competition - awesome!
Road Patrol - Parent supervisors needed
We are looking for parents who are interested in supporting our students to cross the roads safely. You would be on duty one day per week from 8.25 am to 8.55am. Your role would be to supervise the road patrollers as they do their job. If you are interested or would like to learn more, please contact Meegan on mhill@kohimarama.school.nz
Yummy Stickers
If you buy ‘Yummy’ branded fruit, collect the stickers or bag labels and we can exchange them for new sports equipment. Go to the Yummy Stickers page to print a collection form. Or you can find printed collection forms in the office. We appreciate your support.
