A Message from the Principal
A Message from Cowley Team
Last Wednesday the rain finally stopped and Cowley Team got to go on an epic hīkoi investigating the history of our local area. We heard from Rev. Stephen Baxter about Colenso, Atkin, Selwyn and Patteson (who are the people our school houses are named after), and why there are so many Norfolk Pines around Mission Bay and Kohimarama!
We then continued on our hīkoi, spotting lots of local street names that link to our history. We walked all the way to Mission Bay where we stopped for a snack and a play. We talked about the Mission House (which is now near the restaurant by the playground).
After this the Year 3s continued on up to Bastion Point, while the Year 2s headed back to school along Tamaki Drive.
Up at Bastion Point, the Year 3s considered why the area was a great place for a Māori Pā in ancient times and why the land is so important to Ngati Whatua and the people of Auckland today. We had a good look at the surrounding landscape and identified other sites that would have been great for pā.
After that we walked back along Tamaki drive, stopping for another break at Kohimarama Beach, before heading back up the road to school.
Here is what some of us thought about the hīkoi…
Year 3 thoughts…
- Max S and Frankie - We learnt about all of the Houses and all of the men. It was interesting that Mary Atkin’s house got burnt down and got built back exactly the same! You can see it from Kohimarama Road.
- Joaquim and Emma - Bastion Point was our favourite part, because we could see all of the land.
- Grayson - I learnt that the Māori people protected the land.
- Chloe B - I didn’t know that Bishop Selwyn lost his shoes when he came to New Zealand, and then he went without shoes for 2 years!
- Ciara - The Norfolk Pines that are all around here came from Selwyn’s boat!
Year 2 thoughts…
- Hugo - I learnt all about Atkin Avenue and the Green House. This was good because I’m in Atkin!
- Luke W - A Chief’s son got kidnapped in Melanesia and Bishop Selwyn sent people to help him.
- Stella - Joseph Atkin and his sister Mary Atkin’s house got burnt down by a candle!
- Mia - We were talking about Bishop Selwyn, Bishop Atkin and Bishop Patteson. I liked discovering new things
- Eli - I learnt about the houses and looked at the Stone House in Mission Bay - it was really cool!
The Kohimarama Way - Committed
"Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach." Tony Robbins. "Without commitment, you can't have depth in anything." Neil Strauss.
Curriculum Refresh Parent Information Meeting
We are offering parents the opportunity to come and listen to what the Curriculum Refresh means for education in New Zealand. Wednesday 14th June @ 6.30 pm here at school - actual room will be decided on the morning, once we have all RSVP's in from the google form we sent out on Monday.
Cystic Fibrosis - fundraiser Friday 16th June
We are raising funds for people who have Cystic Fibrosis in New Zealand. We are asking student to bring $2 on Friday and dress in their wackiest outfit. This could be a variety of colours, winter and summer mixture of clothing, dress up and day wear, be as wacky as you can. If students would prefer they can come in their usual mufti and bring $2 - whatever works best.
Road Patrol Supervisors - Term 3
We are still looking for parents who are able to give up 35 minutes one morning each week for Term 3 to supervise our students on Road Patrol. We are able to offer support for what you need to do and you can even shadow a teacher one morning to see how it is done. Your support would be most valued, thank you. Email Meegan at mhill@kohimarama.school.nz if you are able to help or would like to find more information.

Yr 5/6 Boys Rugby Team win Bay Suburbs Tournament
Our team won the Bay Suburbs Tackle Rugby Tournament, and went through the round robin with 3 wins out of three, first defeating St Heliers, then Glendowie and finally St Ignatius.
We met Glendowie School again in the final, and saw off their challenge in style. The boys came together as a great team, and are worthy Champions of the Bay.
Special thanks to Head Coach Justin, Manager Anita, and Nepo for transporting the team. It was great to see so many parents and grandparents supporting the team.
